My Cup is Full. ( Self-Care Tea Party Recap)

I am enough. I am enough. I am enough. How many times do we really need to remind ourselves that we are enough? Every. Single. Day. One way I practice self-care is speaking positive affirmations over my life. As women, it is imperative that we do this. Positive thinking and speaking affirmations has helped me in so many ways, especially when i’m embarking on something new. Those horrible thoughts of failure and doubt are dream killers my friends. Had I listened to those doubts, this tea party would not have happened.

Why Is Self-Care So Important?

I’m sure you’ve heard the quote, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” It’s a fact.   Iyanla Vanzant said it perfectly. “It’s self-ful to put yourself first. To be good to yourself. To keep you whole and healthy…What comes out the cup is for y’all, what’s in the cup is for me.”  I couldn’t agree more with Vanzant. So that when we have to take care of others, we’re not operating from an empty cup.  Our cup should be running over!

Being a woman with so many titles (wife, mom, sister, friend, civil rights investigator and entrepreneur) all at the same time has me feeling extremely overwhelmed at times. I struggle with balancing it all, I doubt myself way too much, I am exhausted most of the time and the list can go on. Whew! As I’m writing this I’m thinking to myself, I could really use a nap. It’s 10 am on a Thursday and I need a nap! LOL. Understanding how I feel and listening to my body is being aware of my needs. One of the many ways I can practice self care is going to bed at a reasonable time even if I have a million things to do that day. Those things can wait, especially if I’m feeling exhausted and my body is drained.

Despite how I currently feel emotionally and physically at the moment, I need to remind myself that I am enough. This does not mean that I am perfect and don’t have to work on being a better me.  Rather, it means that God has me where I need to be at this very moment and I am grateful for who I am today. I’ve come a long way, ladies, so I appreciate every chapter of my journey!

I want to encourage you today. Sometimes, those awful feelings of inadequacy, that creep up from time to time, can make you feel like a failure. But you are NOT a failure! We are all a work in progress. No matter how far you’ve come. We should be looking forward to growing and evolving.  Believing that you are enough really has to do with self-acceptance. Loving who you in this current moment and who you are becoming. Do you love who you are becoming? I pray the answer for you is yes. Believing that I am enough also means that I believe positive things about myself despite what others may think about me. Besides, what others think about me is none of my business! And I want to remind you ladies (myself included) that you ARE enough and you are not alone. 💗

Motherhood is not easy but what gives me some hope is the fact that I don’t have to do it alone. Not only do I have God to give me the strength and wisdom I need during this journey, but I also have women like you, to share with, listen to, show support, inspire and to encourage.

Self Care Saturday

On Saturday afternoon, September 22, I was reminded that I am enough and I am not alone. A fabulous group of ladies (some moms, some not) met me at Café Poupon in Baltimore for Fabulous Moms Rock first Self-Care themed Tea Party. It was so awesome to sit at a table with 12 other women, sharing what self care means to us, reciting positive affirmations, sipping a hot cup of French tea, and enjoying some tasty sandwiches and macaroons and really enjoying the conversations and connections with each other. There’s something magical about women coming together as a community, embracing each other and collaborating with one another, all while in a fabulous setting.

The tea party was just amazing. It truly blessed my soul to sit at a table with a fabulous group of women. Self Care is a topic that needs lots of attention, especially because so many women, like myself, don’t put ourselves first most of the time.  Having this tea party was a perfect opportunity for us women to gain some insight and inspiration from each other and when I was planning the party, that was very important for me. I wanted everyone who attended to leave feeling empowered to take the necessary steps to making self care a priority and to think about ways they could implement a self care plan for their own lives.

Okay, so we couldn’t have a Fabulous Tea Party without Fabulous Photos!!  Here’s a photo recap of that awesome afternoon.

My Take-away

If I had to share one thing I learned from planning and hosting the tea party, it would be that everything is figureoutable. I can, without a doubt, figure out how to spend more time putting me first and making self-care a priority. Ladies, if you have something on your heart that you want to do, just go for it!  Did I stress out a little while planning the event? Yes. Did everything work out fine? Yup, actually the event was better than expected! Did I have awesome ladies to support me and encourage me when I was feeling stressed and a little discouraged? Sure did! Moral of the story is there will be times you may be scared to start something new, stressed or worried or tired or discouraged but know that everything is figureoutable. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. They will help keep you focused on the goal. And…do yourself a favor and don’t focus on the people who don’t support you or your vision. Believe me, there will be people who you would expect to support you but they don’t. My advice. Pray for them and keep doing you! Do everything you do with love.  Starting with loving yourself!

So mamas,  now it’s your turn.  Let me know what practicing self care looks like for you! I would love to hear what you fab moms are doing to love yourself more! Leave it in the comment section below.

Stay Fabulous!
