Fabulous Moms Who Rock!
WELCOME TO OUR WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT OF FABULOUS MOMS WHO ROCK! EVERY WEEK, WE FEATURE FABULOUS MOMS WHO ARE DOING AWESOME THINGS! TODAY, WE GET THE ABSOLUTE PLEASURE OF INTRODUCING TO YOU OUR FABULOUS MOM OF THE WEEK, RAINA LOVE.
Raina Love is a fabulous virgo mom of three, a licensed cosmetologist, and a celebrity hairstylist & makeup artist. Raina also specializes in bridal makeup and hair. She’s done hair and makeup for celebrities such as Marla Maples, Vanessa Simmons, Star Jones, Vivienne Tam and Tara Wallace just to name a few. She’s done work for some top brands, Beauty Blender, IGK Hair, Amazon, Dolce & Gabbana and more. Her work has been featured in countless publications and on the runway at New York Fashion Week. Yup, she’s the ultimate boss babe!!! Raina resides in Queens, NY with her three boys, Josiah (17), Caleb (12) and Malachi (9) and their family dog, Simba.
I’ve known Raina since 6th grade when we attended private school together and let me tell ya, her personality has not changed since i’ve known her!!! Raina is full of positive energy, she will tell you like it is, and she is living her life unapologetically. I admire her confidence, her boldness and “you need to come correct or don’t come at all” attitude. Please (fellas, if you’re reading this) don’t go on her social media pages and leave a comment that degrades women, especially our sistas. She will shut you all the way down and you’ll be left with no choice but to delete yo self! (seriously though, she goes in!) LOL! What I admire most about Raina is her passion to help women look and feel beautiful through her artistry. I asked Raina a few questions about her journey as a mom and beauty expert. She shares some awesome tips on how to achieve a flawless makeup look, her self care routine, and so much more. Check it out below:
What do you love most about being a mom?
I love the unique relationships I have with each of my children. After all, they each have distinct personalities and I get to cultivate them & help them find their voice and calling in this world.
Who is your celebrity mom crush and why?
Jada Pinkett-Smith is my celebrity mom crush because I share some of the same values as her. She has a unique wisdom & against the grain understanding about rearing children, as well as taking care of self first!
How would you describe yourself using the acronym F-A-B?
F-Feminine A- Assertive B- Bold
What’s your biggest challenge as a mom?
My biggest challenge as a mom is being a divorced mother of 3 boys. I’m a woman and I know that I can’t teach my sons everything about being a man so I’ve found a really great mentor to help me, my youngest son’s basketball coach. Boys go through a very unique and challenging time when they hit 12 & having a male role model is of the utmost importance. My job is to put the love in them & teach them how to respect women & also be an example of the type of woman I would want them to be with.
How did you get started in the beauty industry?
I was in the army when I decided that when I get out I’ll go to beauty school. So when I had my first son 17 years ago I decided to attend LIBS in herald square.
Who was your very first celebrity client?
My first celebrity client was Tara Wallace from Love & Hip hop. I did all her hair looks for season 4 including the infamous bob.
Who is your dream celebrity client and why?
Brandy. I’ve met her twice. Worked with her at “Beauty Blender’s” pop up shop that she hosted at a makeup studio I worked at. She’s the ultimate triple threat. Her skin is cocoa loveliness! I would love to do her makeup one day, she is absolutely gorgeous and vivacious.
What beauty products are you crushing on right now?
What tips do you have for a mom who would like a flawless makeup look but has limited time to do her makeup?
To achieve a flawless look, start with groomed brows, great skincare & a great foundation that is geared towards your skin type. I even prefer a tinted moisturizer. One of my faves is by Laura Mercier. Purchase a great mascara to make your eyes pop. Purchase a great highlighter, Mac & NARS have great highlighters & some bronzer for the cheeks. Purchase a nude lip or something bright depending on your mood.
If you had to choose only one, which beauty product could you not live without and why?
I cannot live without my MAC highlighter in peach LUSTRE(actual spelling)* It brightens my eyes even when I’ve had a long day working the day before.
What is your favorite beauty hack?
Applying Giorgio Armani fluid master primer before foundation. It’s the perfect base before your base.
What beauty trends would you like to see gone?
I want the Instagram makeup to die. Those heavy brows and overly done L.A Girl highlight & contour. Just die already.
What struggles did you face when breaking into the beauty industry and how did you overcome them?
Finding my niche. 17 years ago there was no social media. Every client I obtained was thru word of mouth. So I had to market myself thru flyers and client referrals.
It’s wedding season, what advice would you give to a bride when looking for makeup and hair for her big day?
When hiring a bridal hairstylist/makeup artist look for quality. Someone who listens to your needs and also gives you advice on what will look best on you. Don’t look for a trendy artist.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I love how I get to transform my clients into the best version of themselves. I love the connections I make with them on a deeper level, their gratitude for what I do and they look at me as a confidence booster.
As a mom of 3 and being your own boss, life can get very hectic & demanding. How do you unwind?
I unwind with weekly, bi-weekly & monthly self-care. I get my lashes re-filled bi-weekly, nails & toes done weekly, facials every 6 weeks,I drink spa water daily & eat clean for the most part. I work out 4 times a week. I also do brunches and dinner with my friends.I’m working on getting massages at least every other month.
What is your mantra, go-to quote, affirmation or scripture that helps you to keep going when you may not feel like it?
Mantra: “I am the creator of my reality. Whatever I focus on I create.”
